The Messenger was the first to shoot with a mangonel

✧ [THE MESSENGER WAS THE FIRST TO SHOOT THE MANGONEL IN ISLAM] Ibn Hishām said: The Messenger of God ﷺ shot at them with the mangonel. Someone I trust related to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ was the first to shoot with a mangonel in Islam; he shot at the people of al-Ṭāʾif. [THE DAY OF AL-SHADKHAH] Ibn Isḥāq said: Until when it was the day of al-Shadkhah by the wall of al-Ṭāʾif, a group of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ entered under a testudo, then they advanced with it to the wall of al-Ṭāʾif to breach it. Thaqīf sent down upon them iron spikes heated in the fire, so they came out from under it, and Thaqīf shot arrows at them and killed some men among them. The Messenger of God ﷺ ordered the cutting of the vines of Thaqīf, and the people fell upon them cutting. [THE NEGOTIATION WITH THAQĪF] Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah advanced toward al-Ṭāʾif and called out, "O Thaqīf, grant us safe-conduct so that we may speak with you." They granted them safe-conduct, and they called upon women from among the women of Quraysh and Banū Kinānah to come out to them, fearing for them capture; but they refused. Among them were Āminah bt. Abī Sufyān, who was married to ʿUrwah b. Masʿūd, and he had from her Dāwūd b. ʿUrwah. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said that the mother of Dāwūd was Maymūnah bt. Abī Sufyān, and she was married to Abū Murrah b. ʿUrwah b. Masʿūd, and she bore him Dāwūd b. Abī Murrah. Ibn Isḥāq said: And al-Firāsiyyah bt. Suwayd b. ʿAmr b. Thaʿlabah, who had ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Qārib, and al-Fuqaymiyyah Umaymah bt. al-Nāsī Umayyah b. Qalʿ. When they refused the two of them, Ibn al-Aswad b. Masʿūd said to them: "O Abū Sufyān and O Mughīrah, shall I not guide you to something better than what you came for? The property of Banū al-Aswad b. Masʿūd is where you both know. The Messenger of God ﷺ was between him and al-Ṭāʾif, encamped in a valley called al-ʿAqīq. There is no property in al-Ṭāʾif farther in rope, more burdensome in expense, or farther in cultivation than the property of Banū al-Aswad. If Muḥammad cuts it, it will never be cultivated again. So speak to him that he may take it for himself, or leave it for God and kinship, for between us and him there is a kinship that is not unknown." They claimed that the Messenger of God ﷺ left it for them.
