The Messenger's march to al-Ta'if and the poetry of Ka'b
Translation
✧ [Shaddād's poem on the march to al-Taʾif] Ibn Isḥāq said: Shaddād b. ʿĀriḍ al-Jushamī said concerning the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ march to al-Taʾif: Do not help al-Lāt, for Allah will destroy her; and how can one be helped who does not help himself? The one that was burned at al-Sudd and burst into flame, and was not fought for; at her stones, voices are wasted. When the Messenger settles in your land, he will depart while no human of its people is left in it. [The road to al-Taʾif] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ traveled through Nakhlat al-Yamāniyah, then through Qarn, then through al-Mulayḥ, then through Buḥrat al-Rughāʾ from Liya, where he built a mosque and prayed in it. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb told me that on that day at Buḥrat al-Rughāʾ, when he encamped there, he carried out a retaliation for blood—the first blood for which retaliation was carried out in Islam—a man of Banū Layth who had killed a man of Hudhayl, and he killed him for it. While at Liya, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered the fortress of Mālik b. ʿAwf to be demolished, and it was. Then he traveled along a road called al-Dayyiqah (the Narrow Pass). When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out in it, he asked its name, saying, "What is the name of this road?" He was told, "al-Dayyiqah." He said, "Rather, it is al-Yusrā (the Easy)." Then he emerged from it at Nakhb, until he dismounted under a lote tree called al-Sādirah, near the property of a man of Thaqīf. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to him: "Either come out, or we will demolish your wall." He refused to come out, so the Messenger of Allah ordered it to be demolished. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved on until he camped near al-Taʾif and pitched his army there. Some of his companions were killed there by arrows, because the army had drawn near the wall of al-Taʾif and the arrows reached them. The Muslims could not enter their wall; they had closed it against them. When those men of his companions were struck by arrows, he moved his army to the site of his mosque that is in al-Taʾif today, and he besieged them for twenty-some nights. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said, seventeen nights. Ibn Isḥāq said: With him were two of his wives, one of them Umm Salamah bt. Abī Umayyah. He pitched two tents for them, then prayed between the two tents. Then he stayed. When Thaqīf embraced Islam, ʿAmr b. Umayyah b. Wahb b. Muʿattib b. Mālik built a mosque over the prayer place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. In that mosque there was a column, as they claim, on which the sun never rose any day of time without a creaking being heard from it. He besieged them, and fought them with fierce fighting, and they exchanged arrows.
