The Messenger's march to al-Ta'if and the poetry of Ka'b

Translation

✧ [THE POETRY OF KINĀNAH IN RESPONSE TO KAʿB] Kinānah b. ʿAbd Yālīl b. ʿAmr b. ʿUmayr answered him, saying: Whoever seeks us, desiring to fight us, we are in an abode, a landmark, from which we do not depart. We found therein the forefathers before what you see, and its lowlands and its vineyards were ours. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir tested us before, and its man of judgment and its forbearing one informed it. It has known, if it speaks the truth, that when the haughty-cheeked refuse, we set them aright. We straighten them until their refractory one yields, and its wrongdoer acknowledges the clear truth. Upon us are coats of mail from the inheritance of Muḥarriq, like the color of the sky, adorned with its stars. We give them rest from us with white, sharp swords that, when drawn in the press of battle, we do not sheathe.
