The Messenger's march to al-Ta'if and the poetry of Ka'b

Translation
✧ The Messenger's march to al-Ṭāʾif and Kaʿb's poem. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ marched to al-Ṭāʾif when he had finished with Ḥunayn; Kaʿb b. Mālik said, when the Messenger of God ﷺ resolved on the march to al-Ṭāʾif: We settled from Tihāmah every doubt, and Khaybar, then we resolved on the swords; we offer them choice, and if they spoke their keen edges would say: Daws or Thaqīf. For I am no guardian to you if you do not see them in the courtyard of your abode, of you thousands, and we shall tear away the trellises in the hollow of Wajj, and your dwellings shall become of you empty, and there shall come to you our swift vanguard of horse, leaving behind it a dense host; when they alight in your courtyard you shall hear for it, from what has made it kneel, a quaking. In their hands are polished keen swords that bring to those who warm themselves by them the fates, like the agates which the smiths of India have made pure, not struck as coat of mail; you would think the blood of the heroes in them, on the morning of the battle, fresh saffron steeped. Their earnestness—have they no counselor among the peoples who was with us a knower, who would tell them that we have gathered the noble steeds and the fine swift camels, and that we have come to them with a host encompassing the wall of their fortress in ranks, whose chieftain is the Prophet, and he was firm, pure of heart, steadfast, abstemious, rightly guided in command, possessed of judgment and knowledge and forbearance, never rash or light; we obey our Prophet and we obey a Lord who is the Compassionate, ever kind to us. So if you cast to us peace, we will accept, and make you for us a supporting and helpful arm; but if you refuse, we will fight you and endure, and our affair shall not be trembling and weak; we will strive as long as we remain, or until you turn to Islam in humble submission, as a guest; we strive and care not whom we meet, whether we destroy the old wealth or the newly gotten. How many a company banded against us, the core of the stock of them and the confederate; they came to us, seeing no equal to themselves, and we cut off the ears and the noses with every Indian sword, pliant, polished, driving them with it a violent driving, for the cause of God and Islam until the religion stands upright, ḥanīf, and al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā and Wadd are forgotten, and we strip them of the necklaces and the earrings; so they have become, having acknowledged and been at ease—and whoever does not resist accepts humiliation.
