Translation

✧ [Ibn Wahb's poetry in reply to Ibn Abī Thawāb] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb, a man of Banū Tamīm, then of Banū Usayyid, replied to him, saying: By God's covenant we strike those we meet as the best of conditions you have seen. We were, O Hawāzin, when we meet, moistening heads with fresh blood, with your gathered forces and the gathered forces of Banū Qasī, we chafe the breast like pounded leaves. We struck your nobles and inclined to killing among the separated and the mingled; there the wounded lies prostrate on his hands, spewing death like a young camel in the throes of death. If Qays ʿAylān are angry, then my snuff will not cease to humiliate them. [Khadīj's poetry on the day of Ḥunayn] Khadīj b. al-ʿAwjāʾ al-Naṣrī said: When we drew near Ḥunayn and its water, we saw a darkness of hateful color, mottled, with a compact, gray mass; if they had hurled it at the peaks of ʿUzwā, they would have become a level plain. If my people's nobles had obeyed me, then we would not have met the disclosing cloud; then we would not have met the army of the family of Muḥammad, eighty thousand, and they sought reinforcement with Khindif.
