Quṣayy's Assumption of Authority over the House and the Support of Rizāḥ for Him
Translation
✧ [Quṣayy's assumption of authority over the House and Ruzāḥ's support for him] Quṣayy saw that he was more entitled to the Kaʿbah and to the authority over Makkah than Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr, and that Quraysh were the pure stock of Ismāʿīl son of Ibrāhīm and his unmixed descendants. So he spoke to men of Quraysh and Banū Kinānah and called them to expel Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr from Makkah, and they answered him. Rabīʿah b. Ḥarām of ʿUdhrah b. Saʿd b. Zayd had come to Makkah after the death of Kilāb, and he married Fāṭimah bt. Saʿd b. Sayal, while Zuhrah was then a grown man and Quṣayy a weaned child. He took her away to his land, and she carried Quṣayy with her, while Zuhrah stayed. She bore Rizāḥ to Rabīʿah. When Quṣayy grew up and became a man, he came to Makkah and settled there. When his people answered his call, he wrote to his maternal brother Rizāḥ b. Rabīʿah, summoning him to support him and stand with him. Rizāḥ b. Rabīʿah set out with his brothers Ḥunn b. Rabīʿah, Maḥmūd b. Rabīʿah, and Julhumah b. Rabīʿah—who were not sons of Fāṭimah—along with those of Quḍāʿah who followed them during the pilgrimage of the Arabs, all resolved to support Quṣayy. Khuzāʿah claim that Ḥulayl b. Ḥubshiyyah had bequeathed that to Quṣayy and commanded him to do it when his descendants through his daughter had become numerous. He said: “You are more entitled to the Kaʿbah, to its guardianship, and to the authority over Makkah than Khuzāʿah.” So at that time Quṣayy sought what he sought. We have not heard this from anyone other than them, and God knows best which of the two it was. The office of granting permission to the people for the pilgrimage, which al-Ghawth b. Murr held Al-Ghawth b. Murr b. Udd b. Ṭābikhah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar used to hold the office of granting permission to the people for the pilgrimage from ʿArafah, and his descendants after him. He and his descendants were called Ṣūfah. Al-Ghawth b. Murr held that office because his mother was a woman of Jurhum who had been barren. She vowed to God that if she bore a male child, she would dedicate him to the Kaʿbah as a servant of hers to serve it and attend to it. She bore al-Ghawth, and he used to attend to the Kaʿbah in the earliest time along with his maternal uncles from Jurhum. Thus he held the office of granting permission to the people from ʿArafah because of his position at the Kaʿbah, and his descendants after him until they died out. Murr b. Udd said, in fulfillment of his mother’s vow: “I have made, by the Lord of the One who built it, A dedication in lofty Makkah, So bless her for me, And make him one of the righteous of creation.” Al-Ghawth b. Murr—as they alleged—when he sent the people forth would say: “O God, I am a follower of a following; If there is sin, it is upon Quḍāʿah.” Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr related to me, from his father ʿAbbād.
