Translation

✧ [Poem of Bujayr on the Day of Ḥunayn] Bujayr b. Zuhayr b. Abī Sulmā said concerning the Day of Ḥunayn: Were it not for God and His servant, you would have turned in flight when terror made every coward light-headed at the bend, on the day our peers came crawling toward us and swift horses that stumble onto their chins— some running with his garment in his hand, others dripping from hoofs and chests. God honored us, made our religion prevail, and strengthened us through worship of the Merciful. God destroyed them, scattered their gathering, and humbled them through worship of Satan. Ibn Hishām said: Some transmitters relate in it: When the uncle of your Prophet and his guardian stood, they called out: O for the battalion of faith! Where are those who answered their Lord on the day of al-ʿUrayḍ and the pledge of al-Riḍwān? [Poem of ʿAbbās b. Mirdās on the Day of Ḥunayn] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbbās b. Mirdās said concerning the Day of Ḥunayn: I, and the swift horses on the day of gathering, and what the Messenger recited of the Book— I loved what Thaqīf met yesterday at the side of the mountain pass, of torment. They are the head of the enemy among the people of Najd, so their slaying is sweeter than wine. We routed the host, the host of Banū Qasiyy, and their chests rubbed against Banū Riʾāb, and a band of Hilāl whom they left at Awṭās, rolling in the dust. Had we met the host of Banū Kilāb, their women would have risen while the dust hung low. We spurred the horses among them from Buss to al-Awrāl, descending with the spoils, with a clamorous host, the Messenger of God among them, his battalion exposing itself to the sword-blows. Ibn Hishām said: His words “rolling in the dust” are from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
