Naming those who were martyred on the day of Hunayn
Translation
✧ [The poetry of Ibn ʿUfayyif in reply to Ibn Mirdās] So ʿAṭiyyah b. ʿUfayyif al-Naṣrī answered him, according to what Ibn Hishām narrated to us, saying: Is Rifāʿah boasting in Ḥunayn, and ʿAbbās b. Rāḍiʿah al-Lijāb? But you and al-Fijār are like an owner of a woolen cloak belonging to her mistress, while you strut about in untanned hides. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAṭiyyah b. ʿUfayyif uttered these two verses when ʿAbbās greatly increased his reproaches against Hawāzin on the day of Ḥunayn. Rifāʿah is from Juhaynah. [Another poem by ʿAbbās b. Mirdās on the day of Ḥunayn] Ibn Isḥāq said: And ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: O seal of the prophets, you are sent with the truth; every guidance of the path is your guidance. Indeed, God has built love for you in His creation, and named you Muḥammad. Then those who fulfilled what you covenanted with them are an army over whom you sent al-Ḍaḥḥāk. A man possessing sharpness of weapons, as though, when the enemy surrounded him, he sees you. He assaults those of close kinship, seeking only the pleasure of the Merciful, then your pleasure. I inform you that I have seen his attack under the dust cloud, crushing polytheism. At times he grapples with both hands, and at times he cleaves skulls with a sharp, cutting sword. With it he assails the crowns of the warriors; if you had seen from him what I witnessed, it would have been your healing. And the Banū Sulaym hasten before him, striking and thrusting at the enemy in close pursuit. They walk beneath his banner, and it is as though they are lions of the thicket that have desired a fight there. They do not hope from the near relative any kinship except for obedience to their Lord and love for you. These are our scenes that were known to us, and our protector is your master.
