The advice of Malik b. Awf to his people and al-Zubayr's encounter with them
Translation
✧ Poetry of Salamah concerning his flight Ibn Isḥāq said: And Salamah b. Durayd said as he was driving his wife along until he had eluded them: You have made me forget, though you were not otherwise afflicted; And you well knew, on the morning of Naʿf al-Aẓrub, That I shielded you while riding was beloved, And I walked behind you like the gait of the ankab; When every well-mannered man with long locks fled From his mother and his bosom friend and did not turn back. Remainder of the account of the slaying of Abū ʿĀmir Ibn Hishām said: A reliable authority on poetry told me, and his account is: Abū ʿĀmir al-Ashʿarī met ten brothers from the polytheists on the day of Awṭās. One of them charged at him, and Abū ʿĀmir charged at him while he was summoning him to Islam and saying: "O God, bear witness against him." And Abū ʿĀmir killed him. Then another charged at him, and Abū ʿĀmir charged at him while he was summoning him to Islam and saying: "O God, bear witness against him." And Abū ʿĀmir killed him. Then they began to charge at him one by one, and Abū ʿĀmir charged and said that, until he had killed nine. The tenth remained. He charged at Abū ʿĀmir, and Abū ʿĀmir charged at him while he was summoning him to Islam and saying: "O God, bear witness against him." The man said: "O God, do not bear witness against me." Abū ʿĀmir held back from him, and he escaped. He later became a Muslim, and his Islam was excellent. When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw him, he would say: "This is the fugitive of Abū ʿĀmir." Two brothers, al-ʿAlāʾ and Awfā, the two sons of al-Ḥārith from Banū Jusham b. Muʿāwiyah, shot Abū ʿĀmir. One of them hit his heart and the other his knee, and they killed him. Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī took charge of the people and charged at the two of them and killed them. A man from Banū Jusham b. Muʿāwiyah said, elegizing them: Indeed the calamity is the slaying of al-ʿAlāʾ and Awfā, Together, and they were not left unsupported. They were the slayers of Abū ʿĀmir, though he had been A fierce, dark, dappled one. They left him on a battlefield As if there were a garment of silk on his shoulder. You will not see among people the like of them: Less prone to stumble and more sure of hand.
