The advice of Malik b. Awf to his people and al-Zubayr's encounter with them

Translation

✧ [Malik b. ʿAwf's instruction to his people and al-Zubayr's encounter with them] And Malik b. ʿAwf went out at the time of the defeat, and stood among horsemen of his people on a mountain pass of the road, and said to his companions: 'Stand firm until your weak ones pass and your rear catch up.' He stood there until those who had joined them from the routed people had passed. Malik b. ʿAwf said about the expedition of Ḥunayn in that regard: And were it not for two charges upon Muḥāj, the road would have become narrow for the ʿaḍārīṭ. And were it not for the charge of Duhmān b. Naṣr at the palm trees, the outlet of the shadīq, Jaʿfar and Banū Hilāl would have returned disgraced, bearing burdens upon shuqūq. Ibn Hishām said: These verses are by Malik b. ʿAwf on a day other than this one. What indicates that to you is the saying of Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah at the beginning of this account: 'What did Kaʿb and Kilāb do?' They said to him: 'None of them witnessed it.' And Jaʿfar b. Kilāb. And Malik b. ʿAwf said in these verses: 'Jaʿfar and Banū Hilāl would have returned.' Ibn Hishām said: It has reached me that some horsemen appeared while Malik and his companions were on the mountain pass, and he said to his companions: 'What do you see?' They said: 'We see people with their spears lowered between the ears of their horses, their shoulder blades long.' He said: 'These are Banū Sulaym, and there is no harm to you from them.' When they approached, they took the bottom of the valley. Then another group of horsemen appeared following them, and he said to his companions: 'What do you see?' They said: 'We see people holding their spears crosswise, without saddlebags on their horses.' He said: 'These are the Aws and the Khazraj, and there is no harm to you from them.' When they reached the foot of the mountain pass, they took the path of Banū Sulaym. Then a horseman appeared, and he said to his companions: 'What do you see?' They said: 'We see a horseman with a long shoulder, his spear placed on his shoulder, his head bound with a red cloak.' He said: 'This is al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām, and I swear by al-Lāt that he will surely mix with you, so stand firm against him.' When al-Zubayr reached the foot of the mountain pass, he saw the people and headed straight for them, and he kept thrusting at them with his spear until he dislodged them from it.
