The killing of Durayd b. al-Simmah
Translation
✧ The killing of Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah Ibn Isḥāq said: When the polytheists were routed, they came to al-Ṭāʾif, and with them was Mālik b. ʿAwf. Some of them encamped at Awṭās, and some of them turned toward Nakhlah. None turned toward Nakhlah except Banū Ghiyarah of Thaqīf. The cavalry of the Messenger of God ﷺ pursued those who took the road through Nakhlah, but did not pursue those who took the mountain passes. Rabīʿah b. Rufayʿ b. Uhbān b. Thaʿlabah b. Rabīʿah b. Yarbūʿ b. Sammāl b. ʿAwf b. Imriʾ al-Qays — he was called Ibn al-Dughunnah, which is his mother, and it prevailed over his name; and it is said Ibn Ladhʿah, according to what Ibn Hishām said — overtook Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah. He seized the halter of his camel, thinking that he was a woman, because he was in a litter. Then behold, it was a man, so he made the camel kneel, and behold, it was a very old man, and it was Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah, but the youth did not recognize him. Durayd said to him: "What do you want with me?" He said: "I will kill you." He said: "Who are you?" He said: "I am Rabīʿah b. Rufayʿ al-Sulamī." Then he struck him with his sword, but it availed nothing. Durayd said: "What a bad weapon your mother armed you with! Take this sword of mine from the back of the saddle — the saddle was in the litter — and strike with it, and raise it above the bones and lower it below the brain, for thus I used to strike men. Then when you come to your mother, tell her that you killed Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah. For by God, many a day I protected your women." Banū Sulaym claimed that when Rabīʿah struck him and he fell, he became uncovered, and behold his perineum and the inner parts of his thighs were like parchment, from riding horses bareback. When Rabīʿah returned to his mother, he informed her that he had killed him. She said: "By God, he freed three mothers of yours." ʿAmrah bt. Durayd said concerning Rabīʿah's killing of Durayd: "By your life, I did not fear for Durayd In the belly of Sumayrah the army of al-ʿAnāq. May God reward Banū Sulaym for him, And they requited him with what they did, with disobedience. And they gave us to drink, when we drove to them, The blood of their best men at the meeting. How many a great affair did you ward off from them, When their souls had reached the collarbones! And how many a noble woman did you set free among them, And another you released from bonds! And how many a man of Sulaym calling your name You answered, when he called you with his last breath. So our recompense from them was disobedience And grief from which the marrow of my shin flowed. The traces of your horses were effaced after a time At Dhū Baqar to Fayf al-Nuhāq." And ʿAmrah bt. Durayd also said: "They said: We killed Durayd. I said: They have spoken truly, So my tears upon the garment keep flowing down. Were it not for Him who subdues all peoples, Sulaym and Kaʿb would see how they take counsel. Then a mighty army would have come upon them morning after morning and evening after evening, Wherever their camp settled." Ibn Hishām said: It is said that the name of the one who killed Durayd was ʿAbd Allāh b. Qunayʿ b. Uhbān b. Thaʿlabah b. Rabīʿah.
