The uncircumcised Christian slave and how Thaqif almost joined him because of it

Translation
✧ [Another poem by Ibn Mirdās] ʿAbbās b. Mirdās al-Sulamī said, mentioning Qārib b. al-Aswad and his flight from the sons of his father and Dhū al-Khimār and his detaining his people for death: Would that a bearer convey from me to Ghaylān—and I think the informed one will reach him— and to ʿUrwah that I am only sending an answer and a saying unlike your saying, slight: that Muḥammad is a servant, a messenger of a Lord who does not err and does not oppress. We found him a prophet like Moses, so every youth who vies with him is deprived. Evil is the affair of the Banū Qasiyy at Wajj when affairs were apportioned: they lost their affair, and for every people there is a commander, and the turns of fortune revolve. We came as lions of thickets to them, the armies of God going forth in the open, heading for the assembly, the assembly of Banū Qasiyy, in rage from which we nearly fly apart. I swear, had they stayed, we would have marched to them with the armies, and they would not have gone down into the lowland. Then we were lions of Liyyah until we made it permissible, and the vultures were given it. And a day before that at Ḥunayn, then it cleared, while the blood in it surged, one of the days unlike which you have not heard a day, nor have any people of remembrance heard of it. We killed in the dust the Banū Ḥuṭayṭ upon their banners, while the horses were arrayed in ranks. Dhū al-Khimār was not a chief of a people who had sense to punish or to scheme. He made them stand upon the path of deaths, while affairs had become clear to those who saw them. He who escaped of them got away choking on his grief, and many of them were slain. The brother of slackness does not avail in affairs, nor the vexed, the one who turns his face, the withheld. He abased them, and it was time, and they made him master of their affairs, while the hawks escaped. The Banū ʿAwf—noble steeds bring them water, steeds for which fresh clover and barley are made cheap. Were it not for Qārib and the sons of his father, the sown lands and the castles would have been divided among you. But they made leadership common upon good fortune to which an adviser pointed. They obeyed Qārib, though they have forefathers and forbearances that lead to might. If they are guided to Islam, they will be found the noses of the people as long as the night-talker talks. And if they do not submit, they are a call to war with God; they have no helper. Just as the Banū Saʿd and Ḥarb scratched with the clan of Banū Ghaziyyah a calamity. It is as if the Banū Muʿāwiyah b. Bakr are, toward Islam, a bleating ewe lowing. So we said: Submit, for we are your brothers, and the breasts have become free of rancor. It is as if the people, when they came to us, were, after peace, one-eyed in hatred. Ibn Hishām said: Ghaylān is Ghaylān b. Salamah al-Thaqafī, and ʿUrwah is ʿUrwah b. Masʿūd al-Thaqafī.
