Sirat Ibn Hisham 1425
The uncircumcised Christian slave and how Thaqif almost joined him because of it
Translation
✧ [The uncircumcised Christian youth and how Thaqif almost caught up due to him] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas related to me that a Christian uncircumcised slave of his was killed together with ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd Allāh. He said: While a man of the Anṣār was stripping the slain of Thaqīf, he uncovered the slave while stripping him and found him uncircumcised. He said: Then he shouted at the top of his voice, "O company of Arabs, God knows that Thaqīf are uncircumcised!" Al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah said: So I took him by the hand, fearing that it would spread among the Arabs concerning us, and I said, "Do not say that, may my father and mother be your ransom. He is only a Christian slave of ours." He said: Then I began uncovering for him some of the slain and saying to him, "Do you not see them circumcised as you see?" [The flight of Qārib and his people and the poem of Ibn Mirdās in satirizing them] Ibn Abī Isḥāq said: The banner of the Aḥlāf was with Qārib b. al-Aswad, and when the people were defeated, he leaned his banner against a tree and fled, he and his paternal cousins and his people of the Aḥlāf. No one of the Aḥlāf was killed except two men: a man of Ghīrah called Wahb, and another of Banū Kubbah called al-Julāḥ? So the Messenger of God ﷺ said, when he learned of the killing of al-Julāḥ, "Today the chief of the youth of Thaqīf has been killed, except for what was the case with Ibn Hunaydah," meaning by Ibn Hunaydah al-Ḥārith b. Uways.
