The gloating of Abu Sufyan and others over the Muslims
Translation
✧ [The gloating of Abu Sufyan and others over the Muslims] Ibn Ishaq said: When the people fled, and those from the rough men of Makkah who were with the Messenger of God ﷺ saw the rout, some of them spoke of the rancor in their souls. Abu Sufyan b. Harb said: 'Their rout will not stop short of the sea, for the divining arrows are with him in his quiver.' Jabala b. al-Hanbal cried out—Ibn Hisham said: Kalada b. al-Hanbal, and he was with his brother Safwan b. Umayya, a polytheist during the term which the Messenger of God ﷺ had granted him—'Lo! Magic has failed today!' Safwan said to him: 'Be quiet! May God break your mouth! By God, that a man of Quraysh should lord over me is dearer to me than that a man of Hawazin should lord over me.' [Hassan's poetry in satire of Kalada] Ibn Hisham said: Hassan b. Thabit said satirizing Kalada: 'I saw a black shape from afar, and it startled me— Abu Hanbal leaping upon Umm Hanbal. As if that with which he leaps on her belly were the foreleg of a young she-camel from the offspring of Ibn ʿIzhil.' Abu Zayd recited these two lines to us, and mentioned to us that with them he satirized Safwan b. Umayya, who was the maternal brother of Kalada.
