The encounter with Hawazin and the steadfastness of the Messenger
Translation
✧ [The encounter with Hawazin and the Messenger's steadfastness] Ibn Ishaq said: 'Asim b. 'Umar b. Qatadah related to me, from 'Abd al-Rahman b. Jabir, from his father Jabir b. 'Abd Allah, who said: When we faced the valley of Hunayn, we descended into a valley of the valleys of Tihamah, a deep, steep-sided valley. We were descending into it in a steep descent. He said: It was in the darkness of dawn, and the people had already preceded us to the valley and lain in ambush for us in its ravines, bends, and narrow passages. They had gathered, prepared, and made ready. By God, nothing startled us as we were descending except the squadrons who charged upon us as one man, and the people turned in flight, no one paying any heed to another. The Messenger of God ﷺ moved to the right and then said: 'Where are you, O people? Come to me! I am the Messenger of God. I am Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah.' He said: But it was to no avail; the camels collided with one another, and the people went off, except that a small group of the Muhajirun, the Ansar, and his household remained with the Messenger of God ﷺ. [Names of those who stood firm with the Messenger] Among those who stood firm with him from the Muhajirun were Abu Bakr and 'Umar, and from his household 'Ali b. Abi Talib, al-'Abbas b. 'Abd al-Muttalib, Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith and his son, al-Fadl b. al-'Abbas, Rabi'ah b. al-Harith, Usamah b. Zayd, and Ayman b. 'Ubayd, who was killed that day. Ibn Hisham said: The name of the son of Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith is Ja'far, and the name of Abu Sufyan is al-Mughirah. Some people include Qutham b. al-'Abbas among them, and do not include the son of Abu Sufyan. Ibn Ishaq said: 'Asim b. 'Umar b. Qatadah related to me, from 'Abd al-Rahman b. Jabir, from his father Jabir b. 'Abd Allah, who said: And a man of Hawazin was on a red camel of his, with a black banner in his hand at the head of a long spear of his, in front of Hawazin, and Hawazin were behind him. When he caught up with someone, he thrust with his spear, and when the people eluded him, he raised his spear for those behind him, and they followed him.
