The account of Dhat Anwat
[ أَمْرُ ذَاتِ أَنْوَاطٍ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ شِهَابٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ سِنَانِ بْنِ أَبِي سِنَانٍ الدُّؤَلِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إلَى حُنَيْنٍ وَنَحْنُ حَدِيثُو عَهْدٍ بِالْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، قَالَ: فَسِرْنَا مَعَهُ إلَى حُنَيْنٍ، قَالَ: وَكَانَتْ كُفَّارُ قُرَيْشٍ وَمَنْ سِوَاهُمْ مِنْ الْعَرَبِ لَهُمْ شَجَرَةٌ عَظِيمَةٌ خَضْرَاءُ، يُقَالُ لَهَا ذَاتُ أَنْوَاطٍ، يَأْتُونَهَا كُلَّ سَنَةٍ، فَيُعَلِّقُونَ أَسْلِحَتَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا، وَيَذْبَحُونَ عِنْدَهَا، وَيَعْكُفُونَ عَلَيْهَا يَوْمًا. قَالَ: فَرَأَيْنَا وَنَحْنُ نَسِيرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ سِدْرَةً خَضْرَاءَ عَظِيمَةً، قَالَ: فَتَنَادَيْنَا مِنْ جَنَبَاتِ الطَّرِيقِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، اجْعَلْ لَنَا ذَاتَ أَنْوَاطٍ كَمَا لَهُمْ ذَاتُ أَنْوَاطٍ. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، قُلْتُمْ، وَاَلَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ، كَمَا قَالَ قَوْمُ مُوسَى لِمُوسَى: اجْعَلْ لَنَا إلَهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ آلِهَةٌ، قَالَ إنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ تَجْهَلُونَ إنَّهَا السُّنَنُ، لَتَرْكَبُنَّ سُنَنَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ
Translation
✧ The matter of Dhat Anwat Ibn Isḥāq said: Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī related to me, from Sinān b. Abī Sinān al-Duʾalī, from Abū Wāqid al-Laythī, that al-Ḥārith b. Mālik said: We went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ to Ḥunayn while we were recent in covenant with the Age of Ignorance. He said: So we traveled with him to Ḥunayn. He said: The unbelievers of Quraysh and other Arabs besides them had a great green tree called Dhāt Anwāṭ, to which they would come every year, hang their weapons upon it, sacrifice beside it, and devote themselves to it for a day. He said: While we were traveling with the Messenger of God ﷺ, we saw a great green lote tree. He said: So we called out to one another from the sides of the road: O Messenger of God, make for us a Dhāt Anwāṭ as they have a Dhāt Anwāṭ. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: God is most great! By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, you have said just as the people of Moses said to Moses: 'Make for us a god as they have gods.' He said: 'You are a people who are ignorant.' Verily, it is the ways: you shall surely follow the ways of those who were before you.
