The Messenger's departure with his army to Hawāzin
Translation
✧ [THE MESSENGER'S DEPARTURE WITH HIS ARMY TO HAWĀZIN] He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ went out, and with him were two thousand of the people of Makkah along with ten thousand of his Companions who had gone out with him and through whom God had opened Makkah for him, so they were twelve thousand. The Messenger of God ﷺ appointed ʿAttāb b. Asīd b. Abī al-ʿĪṣ b. Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams over Makkah as governor over those of the people who stayed behind from him. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ proceeded on his way, intending to meet Hawāzin. [THE POEM OF ʿABBĀS B. MIRDĀS] ʿAbbās b. Mirdās al-Sulamī said: The year brought upon Riʿl the ghoul of their people in the midst of the houses, and the color of the ghoul is many-colored. O grief of Umm Kilāb, when the horses of Ibn Hawdhah fall upon them by night, no one is forbidden, nor is any human. Do not cast her away, and bind firm the knot of your protection; your cousin is Saʿd and Duhmān. You will not return her, even if she is veiled, as long as there is milk in the taken cattle. A disgraceful matter whose evils were covered over by Ḥaḍan, and Dhū Shawghar flowed from it, and Sulwān. It is no better than what the bustard roasts, when he said: every roast of the wild ass is hollow-bellied. And in Hawāzin there is a people, except that in them is the disease of the Yamānī; and if they do not act treacherously, they act unfaithfully. Among them is a brother, if they were faithful or their covenant were true; and even if we wearied them with thrusting, they have become gentle. Convey to Hawāzin, its highest and its lowest, from me a message of counsel in which there is clear explanation: I think the Messenger of God will come upon you in the morning with an army that has corners in the open space of the earth. Among them is your brother Sulaym, who will not abandon you, and the Muslims, servants of God, Ghassān. And on his right wing there are Banū Asad, and the two scabby ones, Banū ʿAbs and Dhubyān. The earth almost trembles from fear of him, and in his vanguard are Aws and ʿUthmān. Ibn Isḥāq said: Aws and ʿUthmān are the two clans of Muzaynah. Ibn Hishām said: From his saying "Convey to Hawāzin, its highest and its lowest" to its end, is in this day, and what was before that is in another day than this day, and they are two separate poems; but Ibn Isḥāq made them one.
