The angels and the scouts of Mālik b. ʿAwf
Translation
✧ [The angels and the spies of Mālik b. ʿAwf] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Mālik said to the people: "When you see them, break the scabbards of your swords, then charge with the charge of one man." He said: And Umayyah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān narrated to me that he said: Mālik b. ʿAwf sent out spies from among his men, and they came to him while their limbs had fallen apart. He said: "Woe to you! What is the matter with you?" They said: "We saw white men on piebald horses, and by God, we could not hold ourselves together. What you see befell us." By God, that did not turn him from his course; he went on with what he intended. [The sending of Ibn Abī Ḥadrad as a spy upon Hawāzin] Ibn Isḥāq said: And when the Prophet of God ﷺ heard of them, he sent to them ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī, and commanded him to enter among the people, to stay among them until he learned their situation, then to bring him their news. So Ibn Abī Ḥadrad set out and entered among them. He stayed among them until he heard and learned what they had agreed upon concerning war against the Messenger of God ﷺ, and heard from Mālik and the affair of Hawāzin what they were upon. Then he returned until he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him of the news. The Messenger of God ﷺ summoned ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and informed him of the news. ʿUmar said: "Ibn Abī Ḥadrad has lied." Ibn Abī Ḥadrad said: "If you call me a liar, then perhaps you have denied the truth, O ʿUmar; indeed you have called one better than me a liar." ʿUmar said: "O Messenger of God, do you not hear what Ibn Abī Ḥadrad says?" The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "You were astray, and God guided you, O ʿUmar." [The Messenger asked Ṣafwān for his coats of mail and weapons, and he accepted] And when the Messenger of God ﷺ resolved to march to Hawāzin to meet them, it was mentioned to him that Ṣafwān b. Umayyah had coats of mail and weapons. So he sent to him while he was at that time a polytheist, and said: "O Abū Umayyah, lend us this weapon of yours so that we may meet our enemy with it tomorrow." Ṣafwān said: "Is it by force, O Muḥammad?" He said: "Rather, it is a loan, guaranteed, until we return it to you." He said: "There is no harm in that." So he gave him one hundred coats of mail with the weapons that sufficed for them. They claimed that the Messenger of God ﷺ asked him to spare them the burden of carrying them, and he did so.
