Translation
✧ The expedition of Ḥunayn in the year eight after the conquest [The gathering of Hawāzin]. Ibn Isḥāq said: When Hawāzin heard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and of what Allah had granted him in the conquest of Makkah, Mālik b. ʿAwf al-Naṣrī gathered them, and with Hawāzin all of Thaqīf joined him, and all of Naṣr and Jusham gathered, and Saʿd b. Bakr, and some people of Banū Hilāl, who were few; and none of Qays ʿAylān attended it except those. Absent from it, and not present, among Hawāzin were Kaʿb and Kilāb, and none of them of any name attended it. In Banū Jusham was Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah, a very old man, in whom there was nothing except seeking blessing by his opinion and his knowledge of war; he was an experienced old man. In Thaqīf there were two of their chiefs: in the Aḥlāf, Qārib b. al-Aswad b. Masʿūd b. Muʿattib, and in Banū Mālik, Dhū al-Khimār Subayʿ b. al-Ḥārith b. Mālik and his brother Aḥmar b. al-Ḥārith. The command of the people rested with Mālik b. ʿAwf al-Naṣrī. When he resolved to march against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he made the people camp with their wealth, their women, and their children. When he halted at Awṭās, the people gathered to him, among them Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah, in a camel-litter of his, being led in it. When he dismounted, he said: "In which valley are you?" They said: "At Awṭās." He said: "An excellent field for horses, neither rugged with sharp rocks nor soft with sinking sand. Why do I hear the grumbling of camels, the braying of donkeys, the weeping of children, and the bleating of sheep?" They said: "Mālik b. ʿAwf has driven with the people their wealth, their women, and their children." He said: "Where is Mālik?" It was said: "This is Mālik," and he was summoned for him. He said: "O Mālik, you have become the chief of your people, and this is a day that will have what follows it of days. Why do I hear the grumbling of camels, the braying of donkeys, the weeping of children, and the bleating of sheep?" He said: "I have driven with the people their wealth, their children, and their women." He said: "And why is that?" He said: "I wanted to place behind every man of them his family and his wealth, so that he might fight for them." He said: "He made a clucking sound at him," then said: "A shepherd of sheep, by Allah! Does anything repel the one put to flight? If it is in your favor, none will benefit you except a man with his sword and his spear; and if it is against you, you will be disgraced in your family and your wealth." Then he said: "What did Kaʿb and Kilāb do?" They said: "None of them attended it." He said: "The keenness and the earnestness are absent. If it were a day of eminence and elevation, Kaʿb and Kilāb would not have been absent from it. Would that you had done what Kaʿb and Kilāb did. Who attended it from among you?" They said: "ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir and ʿAwf b. ʿĀmir." He said: "Those two are the young ones of ʿĀmir; they neither benefit nor harm. O Mālik, you have done nothing by advancing the core, the core of Hawāzin, to the chests of the horses. Remove them to a defensive place in their lands and the high ground of their people; then meet the riders on the backs of the horses. If it is in your favor, those behind you will join you; and if it is against you, you will find that you have safeguarded your family and your wealth." He said: "By Allah, I will not do that. You have grown old, and your mind has grown old. By Allah, you will obey me, O assembly of Hawāzin, or I will lean on this sword until it comes out of my back." He disliked that there be any mention or opinion for Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah in it. They said: "We obey you." Then Durayd b. al-Ṣimmah said: "This is a day I have not witnessed and which has not missed me: Would that I were in it a young goat, trotting in it and laying down, leading a soft-eared ewe, as if she were a sheep with a cleft ear." Ibn Hishām said: More than one of the people of knowledge in poetry recited to me his saying: "Would that I were in it a young goat."
