An Indication of the Account of the Digging of Zamzam
إشَارَةٌ إلَى ذِكْرِ احْتِفَارِ زَمْزَمَ [ شَيْءٌ عَنْ زَمْزَمَ ] قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إسْحَاقَ الْمُطَّلِبِيُّ: بَيْنَمَا عَبْدُ الْمُطَلِّبِ بْنُ هَاشِمٍ نَائِمٌ فِي الْحِجْرِ، إذْ أُتِيَ فَأُمِرَ بِحَفْرِ زَمْزَمَ، وَهِيَ دَفْنٌ بَيْنَ صَنَمَيْ قُرَيْشٍ: إسَافٍ وَنَائِلَةٍ. عِنْدَ مَنْحَرِ قُرَيْشٍ. وَكَانَتْ جُرْهُمُ دَفَنَتْهَا حِينَ ظَعَنُوا مِنْ مَكَّةَ، وَهِيَ بِئْرُ إسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ إبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِمَا السَّلَامُ، الَّتِي سَقَاهُ اللَّهُ حِينَ ظَمِئَ وَهُوَ صَغِيرٌ، فَالْتَمَسَتْ لَهُ أُمُّهُ مَاءً فَلَمْ تَجِدْهُ، فَقَامَتْ إلَى الصَّفَا تَدْعُو اللَّهَ وَتَسْتَغِيثُهُ لِإِسْمَاعِيلَ، ثُمَّ أَتَتْ الْمَرْوَةَ فَفَعَلَتْ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ. وَبَعَثَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ، فَهَمَزَ لَهُ بِعَقِبِهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ، فَظَهَرَ الْمَاءُ، وَسَمِعَتْ أُمُّهُ أَصْوَاتَ السِّبَاعِ فَخَافَتْهَا عَلَيْهِ، فَجَاءَتْ تَشْتَدُّ نَحْوَهُ، فَوَجَدَتْهُ يَفْحَصُ بِيَدِهِ عَنْ الْمَاءِ مِنْ تَحْتِ خَدِّهِ وَيَشْرَبُ، فَجَعَلَتْهُ حِسْيًا.
Translation
✧ A reference to the mention of the digging of Zamzam [something about Zamzam]. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Muṭṭalibī said: While ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim was sleeping in the Ḥijr, someone came to him and commanded him to dig Zamzam, which is a buried well between the two idols of Quraysh: Isāf and Nāʾilah, at the slaughtering place of Quraysh. Jurhum had buried it when they departed from Makkah. It is the well of Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm, upon them be peace, which Allah gave him to drink when he thirsted while he was small. His mother sought water for him but did not find it, so she stood at al-Ṣafā calling upon Allah and seeking His help for Ismāʿīl, then she came to al-Marwah and did the same. Then Allah, may He be exalted, sent Jibrīl ﷺ, and he struck the ground for him with his heel, and the water appeared. His mother heard the sounds of wild beasts and feared them for him, so she came running toward him, and found him scraping with his hand at the water from under his cheek and drinking, and she made it into a ḥisy.
