Quraysh's sending of Suhayl to the Messenger for reconciliation

Translation

✧ [ʿUmar's disapproval of the Messenger's peace] When the matter was settled and nothing remained but the writing, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb jumped up and went to Abū Bakr and said: O Abū Bakr, is he not the Messenger of Allah? He said: Yes. He said: Are we not Muslims? He said: Yes. He said: Are they not polytheists? He said: Yes. He said: Then why should we accept humiliation in our religion? Abū Bakr said: O ʿUmar, hold fast to his stirrup, for I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah. ʿUmar said: And I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah. Then he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, are you not the Messenger of Allah? He said: Yes. He said: Are we not Muslims? He said: Yes. He said: Are they not polytheists? He said: Yes. He said: Then why should we accept humiliation in our religion? He said: I am Allah's servant and His Messenger. I will not disobey His command, and He will not let me be lost. He said: ʿUmar used to say: I have never ceased giving alms, fasting, praying, and freeing slaves, because of what I did that day, fearing my words that I had spoken, until I hoped that it might be good.
