Translation

✧ The matter of al-basl [definition of al-basl, and the lineage of the poet Zuhayr]. Al-basl—as they claim—is eight sacred months, belonging to them from every year among the Arabs. The Arabs acknowledged that for them, neither denying it nor repudiating it. They would travel with it to whichever lands of the Arabs they wished, fearing nothing from them. Zuhayr b. Abī Sulmā said, meaning Banū Murrah:— Ibn Hishām said: Zuhayr is one of Banū Muzaynah b. Udd b. Ṭābikhah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar, and it is said Zuhayr b. Abī Sulmā is from Ghaṭafān, and it is said an ally among Ghaṭafān: "Tarry, and if the two of you alight at al-Marūrāt from them and its dwellings, do not alight at them; then the palm trees of a land wherein is their companion and their familiar one—if you alight at them, then they are basl." He says: they traveled in their sacred months. Ibn Hishām said: These two verses are in an ode of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: And Aʿshā Banī Qays b. Thaʿlabah said: "Your neighbor woman is basl to us, forbidden, and our neighbor woman is lawful to you, and her lawful one." Ibn Hishām said: This verse is in an ode of his.
