Translation
✧ The chiefs of Murrah: Ibn Isḥāq said: The people were nobles among Ghaṭafān; they were their masters and leaders. Among them were: Harim b. Sinān b. Abī Ḥārithah [b. Murrah b. Nushbah], Khārijah b. Sinān b. Abī Ḥārithah, al-Ḥārith b. ʿAwf, al-Ḥuṣayn b. al-Ḥumām, and Hāshim b. Ḥarmalah, of whom a poet said: 'He revived his father Hāshim b. Ḥarmalah on the day of al-Habāʾāt and the day of al-Yaʿmalah; you see kings sifted before him; he kills the guilty and the guiltless.' [Hāshim b. Ḥarmalah and ʿĀmir al-Khaṣafī] Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah recited to me these verses by ʿĀmir al-Khaṣafī, of Khaṣafah b. Qays b. ʿAylān: 'He revived his father Hāshim b. Ḥarmalah on the day of al-Habāʾāt and the day of al-Yaʿmalah; you see kings sifted before him; he kills the guilty and the guiltless; and his spear is a trouble for mothers.' He told me that Hāshim said to ʿĀmir: 'Compose a good verse about me and I will reward you for it.' So ʿĀmir recited the first verse, and it did not please Hāshim; then he recited the second, and it did not please him; then he recited the third, and it did not please him; but when he recited the fourth: 'He kills the guilty and the guiltless,' it pleased him, and he rewarded him for it. Ibn Hishām said: That is what al-Kumayt b. Zayd meant in his saying: 'And Hāshim Murrah, who destroys kings, those with no sin against him and those who sin.' This verse is in an ode of his. The saying of ʿĀmir, 'the day of al-Habāʾāt,' is from other than Abū ʿUbaydah. [Murrah and al-basl] Ibn Isḥāq said: A people of renown and mention among all of Ghaṭafān and Qays; they maintained their lineage, and among them was al-basl.
