The genealogy of Murrah
Translation
✧ [The genealogy of Murrah] Ibn Isḥāq said: He is in the genealogy of Ghaṭafān: Murrah b. ʿAwf b. Saʿd b. Dhubyān b. Baghīḍ b. Rayth b. Ghaṭafān. When this genealogy is mentioned to them, they say: We do not deny it and we do not reject it, and it is the most beloved genealogy to us. Al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim b. Judhaymah b. Yarbūʿ — Ibn Hishām said: one of the Banū Murrah b. ʿAwf — said, when he fled from al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir and joined Quraysh: My people are not Thaʿlabah b. Saʿd, nor Fazārah of the hairy-necked ones. My people, if you ask, are Banū Luʾayy who at Makkah taught Muḍar how to fight. We were foolish to follow Banū Baghīḍ, and to abandon our nearest kin in lineage — the foolishness of one who breaks what he has tied, pours away the water, and follows the mirage. Had you obeyed, by your life, you would have been among them, and I would not have been found seeking the rain-clouds. And the Qurayshī man’s departure has pierced my saddle with a swift she-camel, seeking no reward. Ibn Hishām said: This is what Abū ʿUbaydah recited to me of it. Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Ḥuṣayn b. al-Ḥumām al-Murrī — then one of the Banū Sahm b. Murrah — replied to al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim, and claimed descent from Ghaṭafān: Indeed, you are not from us and we are not to you; we disown to you from Luʾayy b. Ghālib. We remained upon the glory of the Ḥijāz, while you were in the rugged ground of the valley between the two mountains — meaning Quraysh. Then al-Ḥuṣayn regretted what he had said, and recognized what al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim had said, so he claimed descent from Quraysh and declared himself a liar, saying: I regret a saying that passed which I had said; I realized that it was a false saying. Would that my tongue had been two halves: one of them dumb, and half at the course of the stars. Our father is Kinānī, whose grave at Makkah is in the rugged ground of the valley between the two mountains. To us belongs a fourth of the Sacred House as inheritance, and a fourth of the valley beside the house of Ibn Ḥāṭib — meaning that the Banū Luʾayy were four: Kaʿb, ʿĀmir, Sāmah, and ʿAwf. Ibn Isḥāq said: And someone I do not suspect informed me that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ said to some men of the Banū Murrah: If you wish to return to your genealogy, then return to it.
