The genealogy of Khuzāʿah

Translation

✧ The affair of ʿAwf b. Luʾayy and his transmitters [the reason for his affiliation with Banū Dhubyān]. Ibn Isḥāq said: As for ʿAwf b. Luʾayy, he went out—so they claim—in a riding party of Quraysh, until when he was in the land of Ghaṭafān b. Saʿd b. Qays b. ʿAylān, he was delayed, and those of his people who were with him went on. Thaʿlabah b. Saʿd came to him, and he is his brother in the lineage of Banū Dhubyān—Thaʿlabah b. Saʿd b. Dhubyān b. Baghīḍ b. Rayth b. Ghaṭafān. And ʿAwf b. Saʿd b. Dhubyān b. Baghīḍ b. Rayth b. Ghaṭafān—and he detained him and married him, and adopted him and made him his brother. So his lineage spread among Banū Dhubyān. And Thaʿlabah—so they claim—is the one who said to ʿAwf when he was delayed and his people left him: Keep your camel for me, O son of Luʾayy; The people have left you, and you have no home. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr, or Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥuṣayn, related to me that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: If I were to claim any living group of the Arabs, or attach them to us, I would claim Banū Murrah b. ʿAwf. Indeed, we recognize in them the resemblances, along with what we know of the place where that man fell—meaning ʿAwf b. Luʾayy.
