Translation
✧ The affair of Sāmah [his journey to ʿUmān and his death, Sāmah b. Luʾayy] Ibn Isḥāq said: As for Sāmah b. Luʾayy, he went out to ʿUmān, and he was there. They claim that ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy expelled him; that is because there was something between them, and Sāmah gouged out ʿĀmir's eye, so ʿĀmir frightened him, and he went out to ʿUmān. They claim that Sāmah b. Luʾayy, while he was traveling on his she-camel, she lowered her head to graze, and a snake seized her lip and dragged her down until the she-camel fell on her side; then it bit Sāmah and killed him. Sāmah said when he felt death, according to what they claim: O my eye, weep for Sāmah b. Luʾayy; the noose has fastened Sāmah's leg. I see none like Sāmah b. Luʾayy on the day they left him, killed by a she-camel. Convey to ʿĀmir and Kaʿb a message: that my soul longs for them. If my abode is in ʿUmān, then I am a Ghālibī; I went out without a she-camel. Many a cup you spilled, O son of Luʾayy, in fear of death, that was not to be spilled. You sought to ward off fates, O son of Luʾayy; no one who seeks that has power over fate. And a silent traveler by night you left as a ruin after striving and effort and elegance. Ibn Hishām said: It reached me that one of his descendants came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and traced his lineage back to Sāmah b. Luʾayy. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "The poet?" One of his companions said to him: "It is as if you, O Messenger of God, meant his saying: Many a cup you spilled, O son of Luʾayy, in fear of death, that was not to be spilled." He said: "Yes."
