ʿAmr and Khālid's agreement on Islam
[ اجْتِمَاعُ عَمْرٍو وَخَالِدٍ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ ] ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ عَامِدًا إلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِأُسْلِمَ، فَلَقِيتُ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ، وَذَلِكَ قُبَيْلَ الْفَتْحِ، وَهُوَ مُقْبِلٌ مِنْ مَكَّةَ، فَقُلْتُ: أَيْنَ يَا أَبَا سُلَيْمَانَ ؟ قَالَ: وَاَللَّهِ لَقَدْ اسْتَقَامَ الْمَنْسِمُ، وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَنَبِيٌّ، أَذْهَبُ وَاَللَّهِ فَأُسْلِمَ، فَحَتَّى مَتَى؛ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: وَاَللَّهِ مَا جِئْتُ إلَّا لِأُسْلِمَ. قَالَ: فَقَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ، فَتَقَدَّمَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَأَسْلَمَ وَبَايَعَ، ثُمَّ دَنَوْتُ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إنِّي أُبَايِعُكَ عَلَى أَنْ يُغْفَرَ لِي مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِي، وَلَا أَذْكُرُ مَا تَأَخَّرَ؛ قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: يَا عَمْرُو، بَايِعْ، فَإِنَّ الْإِسْلَامَ يَجُبُّ مَا كَانَ قَبْلَهُ، وَإِنَّ الْهِجْرَةَ تَجُبُّ مَا كَانَ قَبْلَهَا قَالَ: فَبَايَعْتُهُ، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفْتُ. قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَيُقَالُ: فَإِنَّ الْإِسْلَامَ يَحُتُّ مَا كَانَ قَبْلَهُ، وَإِنَّ الْهِجْرَةَ تَحُتُّ مَا كَانَ قَبْلَهَا
Translation
✧ [ The joining of ʿAmr and Khālid upon Islam ] Then I went out heading to the Messenger of God ﷺ to become Muslim, and I met Khālid b. al-Walīd, and that was shortly before the conquest, when he was coming from Makkah. I said: Where to, O Abū Sulaymān? He said: By God, the hoof has straightened, and the man is indeed a prophet; I am going, by God, to become Muslim; so until when? He said: I said: By God, I have not come except to become Muslim. He said: So we arrived in Madinah to the Messenger of God ﷺ. Khālid b. al-Walīd went forward and became Muslim and pledged allegiance. Then I drew near and said: O Messenger of God, I pledge allegiance to you on condition that my past sins be forgiven, and I do not mention what is to come. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: O ʿAmr, pledge allegiance, for Islam cuts off what was before it, and the emigration cuts off what was before it. He said: So I pledged allegiance to him, then I departed. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: For Islam erases what was before it, and the emigration erases what was before it.
