ʿAmr's going with others to the Negus
[ سُؤَالُهُ النَّجَاشِيَّ فِي قَتْلِ عَمْرٍو الضَّمْرِيِّ وَرَدُّهُ عَلَيْهِ ] فَوَاَللَّهِ إنَّا لَعِنْدَهُ إذْ جَاءَهُ عَمْرُو بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ الضَّمْرِيُّ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ بَعَثَهُ إلَيْهِ فِي شَأْنِ جَعْفَرٍ وَأَصْحَابِهِ. قَالَ: فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ. قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ لِأَصْحَابِي: هَذَا عَمْرُو بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ الضَّمْرِيُّ، لَوْ قَدْ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى النَّجَاشِيِّ وَسَأَلْتُهُ إيَّاهُ فَأَعْطَانِيهِ، فَضَرَبْتُ عُنُقَهُ، فَإِذَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ رَأَتْ قُرَيْشٌ أَنِّي قَدْ أَجْزَأْتُ عَنْهَا حِينَ قَتَلْتُ رَسُولَ مُحَمَّدٍ. قَالَ: فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَسَجَدْتُ لَهُ كَمَا كُنْتُ أَصْنَعُ، فَقَالَ: مَرْحَبًا بِصَدِيقِي، أَهْدَيْتَ إلَيَّ مِنْ بِلَادِكَ شَيْئًا ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، أَيُّهَا الْمَلِكُ، قَدْ أَهْدَيْتُ إلَيْكَ أَدَمًا كَثِيرًا؛ قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَرَّبْتُهُ إلَيْهِ، فَأَعْجَبَهُ وَاشْتَهَاهُ ثُمَّ قُلْتُ لَهُ: أَيُّهَا الْمَلِكُ، إنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَجُلًا خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ، وَهُوَ رَسُولُ رَجُلٍ عَدُوٍّ لَنَا، فَأَعْطِنِيهِ لِأَقْتُلَهُ، فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ أَصَابَ مِنْ أَشْرَافِنَا وَخِيَارِنَا؛ قَالَ: فَغَضِبَ، ثُمَّ مَدَّ يَدَهُ فَضَرَبَ بِهَا أَنْفَهُ ضَرْبَةً ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ قَدْ كَسَرَهُ، فَلَوْ انْشَقَّتْ لِي الْأَرْضُ لَدَخَلْتُ فِيهَا فَرَقًا مِنْهُ؛ ثُمَّ قُلْتُ لَهُ: أَيّهَا الْمَلِكُ، وَاَللَّهِ لَوْ ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّكَ تَكْرَهُ هَذَا مَا سَأَلْتُكَهُ؛ قَالَ: أَتَسْأَلُنِي أَنْ أُعْطِيَكَ رَسُولَ رَجُلٍ يَأْتِيهِ النَّامُوسُ الْأَكْبَرُ الَّذِي كَانَ يَأْتِي مُوسَى لِتَقْتُلَهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: أَيُّهَا الْمَلِكُ، أَكَذَاكَ هُوَ ؟ قَالَ: وَيْحَكَ يَا عَمْرُو أَطِعْنِي وَاتَّبِعْهُ، فَإِنَّهُ وَاَللَّهِ لَعَلَى الْحَقِّ، وَلَيَظْهَرَنَّ عَلَى مَنْ خَالَفَهُ، كَمَا ظَهَرَ مُوسَى عَلَى فِرْعَوْنَ وَجُنُودِهِ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: أَفَتُبَايِعُنِي لَهُ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَبَسَطَ يَدَهُ، فَبَايَعْتُهُ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ إلَى أَصْحَابِي وَقَدْ حَالَ رَأْيِي عَمَّا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ، وَكَتَمْتُ أَصْحَابِي إسْلَامِي
Translation
✧ [His asking the Negus for the killing of ʿAmr al-Ḍamrī and his reply to him] For by God, while we were with him, ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī came to him; the Messenger of God ﷺ had sent him to him concerning the affair of Jaʿfar and his companions. He said: He entered upon him, then came out from his presence. He said: I said to my companions: This is ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī. If I were to enter upon the Negus and ask him for him, and he gave him to me, I would strike his neck. If I did that, Quraysh would see that I had served them sufficiently by killing the messenger of Muḥammad. He said: I entered upon him and prostrated to him as I used to do. He said: Welcome to my friend. Have you brought me a gift from your land? He said: I said: Yes, O king, I have brought you many hides. He said: Then I presented it to him, and he admired it and desired it. Then I said to him: O king, I have seen a man who came out from your presence, and he is the messenger of a man who is an enemy to us. Give him to me so that I may kill him, for he has struck our nobles and our best men. He said: He became angry, then stretched out his hand and struck his nose with it a blow that I thought had broken it. Had the earth split open for me, I would have entered it out of fear of him. Then I said to him: O king, by God, if I had thought that you would dislike this, I would not have asked you for it. He said: Do you ask me to give you the messenger of a man to whom the great Nāmūs comes, the one who used to come to Moses, so that you may kill him? He said: I said: O king, is he truly so? He said: Woe to you, O ʿAmr. Obey me and follow him, for by God, he is upon the truth, and he will prevail over those who oppose him, just as Moses prevailed over Pharaoh and his armies. He said: I said: Will you pledge allegiance to me to him upon Islam? He said: Yes. Then he stretched out his hand, and I pledged allegiance to him upon Islam. Then I went out to my companions, and my opinion had changed from what it had been, and I concealed my Islam from my companions.
