ʿAmr's going with others to the Negus
Translation
✧ The Islam of ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ and Khālid b. al-Walīd [ʿAmr's going with others to the Negus] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb related to me, from Rāshid, the mawlā of Ḥabīb b. Abī Aws al-Thaqafī, from Ḥabīb b. Abī Aws al-Thaqafī, who said: ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ related to me from his own mouth, saying: When we returned with the confederates from the trench, I gathered some men of Quraysh who shared my view and listened to me, and I said to them: You know, by God, that I consider Muḥammad's affair to be rising above all affairs in a reprehensible manner. I have formed an opinion; what do you think of it? They said: What opinion have you formed? He said: I think we should join al-Najāshī and stay with him. If Muḥammad prevails over our people, we will be with al-Najāshī; for us to be under his authority is more preferable to me than to be under Muḥammad's authority. And if our people prevail, then we are those whom they know, and nothing but good will come to us from them. They said: This is the right opinion. I said: Then gather for us what we should send as a gift to him, and the most beloved thing to be sent to him from our land was leather. So we gathered for him much leather, then we set out until we arrived before him.
