Translation

✧ [Ḥassān's poetry in boasting of the killing of ʿAmr on the day of the Trench] Ḥassān b. Thābit said, boasting of the killing of ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Wudd: Your remnant ʿAmr we permitted to be slain by the spear at Yathrib, protecting while the protectors were few. We killed you with every Indian sword, and we are the masters of war when we charge. We killed you at Badr, and your clans became wandering among the perished. Ibn Hishām said: Some people of knowledge in poetry deny these verses to Ḥassān. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit also said concerning the affair of ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Wudd: In the evening the youth ʿAmr b. ʿAbd sought his vengeance in the south of Yathrib without respite. You found our swords renowned, and you found our steeds not held back. You met at dawn of Badr a band who struck you a blow not the blow of the disarmed. You have become not called for a day of great affair, O ʿAmr, or for a momentous, abominable matter. Ibn Hishām said: Some people of knowledge in poetry deny these verses to Ḥassān. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit also said: Lo, convey to Abū Hidm a message, a swift-riding one that the mounts race with. Was I your ally in every hardship, while another in ease is the ally? From you is a witness, and he saw me raised to him as an infant is carried. Ibn Hishām said: These verses are also related on the authority of Rabīʿah b. Umayyah al-Daylī, and in them is related as their end: He threw the Khazrajī upon his hands, and the healing of my soul was the Khazrajī. It is also related on the authority of Abū Usāmah al-Jushamī.
