Account of the poetry recited on the day of Uḥud

Translation

✧ [The poetry of Nuʿam in mourning Shammās] Ibn Isḥāq said: And Nuʿam, the wife of Shammās b. ʿUthmān, said, mourning Shammās — and he was struck down on the day of Uḥud: O eye, flow generously with tears, without stinting, For a noble youth, a fierce lion among the young men; Formidable in sudden encounter, blessed in disposition, Carrier of standards, rider of steeds. I said, when the bearer of the news of his death came to me, in anguish, The generous one has perished, and the feeder and the clother has perished; And I said, when his assemblies were left empty of him, May God not make distant from us the nearness of Shammās.
