Account of the poetry recited on the day of Uḥud
[ شِعْرُ صَفِيَّةَ فِي بُكَاءِ حَمْزَةَ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَقَالَتْ صَفِيَّةُ بِنْتُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، تَبْكِي أَخَاهَا حَمْزَةَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ: أَسَائِلَةً أَصْحَابَ أُحْدٍ مَخَافَةً بَنَاتُ أَبِي مِنْ أَعْجَمٍ وَخَبِيرِ فَقَالَ الْخَبِيرُ إنَّ حَمْزَةَ قَدْ ثَوَى وَزِيرُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ خَيْرُ وَزِيرِ دَعَاهُ إلَهُ الْحَقِّ ذُو الْعَرْشِ دَعْوَةً إلَى جَنَّةٍ يَحْيَا بِهَا وَسُرُورِ فَذَلِكَ مَا كُنَّا نُرَجِّي وَنَرْتَجِي لِحَمْزَةِ يَوْمَ الْحَشْرِ خَيْرِ مَصِيرِ فَوَاَللَّهِ لَا أَنْسَاكَ مَا هَبَّتْ الصِّبَا بُكَاءً وَحُزْنًا مَحْضَرِي وَمَسِيرِي عَلَى أَسَدِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي كَانَ مِدْرَهَا يَذُودُ عَنْ الْإِسْلَامِ كُلَّ كَفُورِ فَيَا لَيْتَ شِلْوِي عِنْدَ ذَاكَ وَأَعْظُمِي لَدَى أَضْبُعٍ تَعْتَادُنِي وَنُسُورِ أَقُولُ وَقَدْ أَعْلَى النَّعِيَّ عَشِيرَتِي جَزَى اللَّهُ خَيْرًا مِنْ أَخٍ وَنَصِرْ قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَأَنْشَدَنِي بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ بِالشِّعْرِ قَوْلَهَا: بُكَاءً وَحُزْنًا مَحْضَرِي وَمَسِيرِي
Translation
✧ The poetry of Ṣafiyyah in lamenting Ḥamzah. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ṣafiyyah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, weeping for her brother Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: Asking the companions of Uḥud in fear, the daughters of my father are from ʿAʿjam and Khabīr. Then the Khabīr said that Ḥamzah has settled, the vizier of God's Messenger, the best vizier. The God of Truth, Possessor of the Throne, called him with a call to a garden in which he lives with delight. That is what we hoped and expected for Ḥamzah on the Day of Assembly, the best of destinations. By God, I will never forget you as long as the east wind blows, weeping and grief in my presence and my journey, for the lion of God, who was a shield, defending Islam from every ingrate. If only my corpse at that, and my bones, were with hyenas that haunt me and vultures. I say, when the obituary raised my kin, may God reward the best of a brother and helper. Ibn Hishām said: A person of knowledge in poetry recited to me her saying: 'weeping and grief in my presence and my journey'.
