✧ Poetry of al-Aʿshā al-Tamīmī in mourning the slain of Banū ʿAbd al-Dār on the day of Uḥud And al-Aʿshā b. Zurārah b. al-Nabbāsh al-Tamīmī — Ibn Hishām said: then one of Banū Asad b. ʿAmr b. Tamīm — said, mourning the slain of Banū ʿAbd al-Dār on the day of Uḥud: Greeted be the tribe whose distance grieves me, the Banū Abī Ṭalḥah — may it not be averted. Their cupbearer passes among them with it, and every cupbearer of theirs is known. Their neighbor does not complain, nor their guest; before him is a gate of theirs that turns away. And ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā said on the day of Uḥud: We killed Ibn Jaḥsh and rejoiced at his killing, and Ḥamzah among his horsemen, and Ibn Qawqal. And some men among them escaped us and hastened away; would that they had turned back and we had not been hasty. Had they stayed for us until our swords bit into their chiefs, and none of us was unarmed, and until killing was among us and among them, and they met a morning draught whose evil would not be dispelled. Ibn Hishām said: His words “and none of us” and “and they met a morning draught” are from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
