Account of the poetry recited on the day of Uḥud

Translation

✧ Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb also said concerning the expedition of Uḥud: When there came from Banū Kaʿb, adorned, the Khazrajī woman among whom the white ones gleam, and they unsheathed polished Mashrafī swords and a banner like the wing of an eagle fluttering, I said: A day for days, and a battle that will tell what is behind it, as the leaves were shaken. They have been accustomed every day to have the wind of battle and the spoils of those they meet. I chose for myself despite the fear that was in me, and I knew that glory is to be striven for. I urged on my colt until it plunged into their crush, and it was wetted from dark blood by clots. My colt and my coat of mail remained, their two bodies smeared with the pulsing of veins, the spray of thrusting, and the leaves. I knew that I would stay in their abode until what is in its interior parted from the pupils. Do not be dismayed, O Banū Makhzūm; you have among you one like al-Mughīrah, in whom there is no faltering. Patience, may my mother and what she bore be your ransom; take turns at striking until the twilight retreats.
