Translation
✧ [Poetry of ʿAmr on the day of Uḥud] ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ said: When I saw war—its evil leaping with heated stones, leaping— and a gray she-camel took to blaming people with harm, blaming, I knew that death is true and life becomes vain. I loaded my garments upon a vigorous mount that outruns horses effortlessly, easy to handle when they strike into the desert, it rises above the steed, rising, and when its water descends from its side it increases in pride, swift like the fawn of the ṣarīmah, whom the archers startled, a startler, with taut sinews, controlling the horses in slackness and running. May my mother be ransom for them on the morning of terror when they walked with short steps, marching toward the ram of the battalion when the sun revealed it, revealing. Ibn Hishām said: Some scholars of poetry deny this poem to ʿAmr.
