Translation

✧ [The poetry of Ḍirār on the day of Uḥud] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: By your grandfather, were it not for my horse’s advance, when the horses milled between the bend and the open plain, There would not have ceased from you, by the side of the bend of Uḥud, the voices of skulls whose affair is clamorous, vying with one another, And a horseman whose crown the sword struck—the clefts of his skull like a shepherd’s woolen mantle. By your grandfather, I shall never cease girding on a sharp-edged blade like the color of salt, ever-cutting, Upon the saddle of a hardy, long-striding mount, persevering toward the war-cry when the summoner raises the call. I have not traced my lineage to weaklings, nor to those who shrink back, nor to base cowards on the day of battle; Rather, to strikers with the weave-patterned white blades, when they close in—lofty-nosed, pungent at the moment of death— Lofty, generous chiefs, whose sword-straps hang loose, they hasten toward death with an unhesitating haste.
