Translation

✧ [The poetry of ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ on the day of Uḥud] Ibn Hishām said: Some of the people of knowledge in poetry deny these two poems to Ḥassān and Ibn al-Zibaʿrā. And his saying: "māḍī al-shabāh" and "ṭayr yajifna" are from other than Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ said on the day of Uḥud: We went out from al-Fayfāʾ upon them, as if we, with the dawn, were from Raḍwā the closely woven, girded sandhill. The Banū al-Najjār foolishly wished to meet us by the side of Salʿ, but wishes may come true. Nothing startled them with evil except the sudden rush of squadrons of horses, through the alleys, darting. They intended to make our tents lawful spoil, but before the tents that day there was burning striking. The tents were secure before what you see, when a people sought them they were given as spoil and enraged. As if the heads of the two Khazrajites in the morning, and their right hands with the Mushrafī swords, were the stalks of the asphodel.
