Account of the poetry recited on the day of Uḥud

Translation

✧ Ḥassān's poetry in reply to Ibn al-Zibaʿrā Ḥassān b. Thābit replied to him, saying: Has the abodes of Umm al-Walīd stirred your longing— empty ruins, with none of their people gathered there? The summer winds have effaced them, and a pouring cloud, heavily laden, with thunderous downpour. Nothing remains but the fire's hearth, around it ashes settled, like crouching doves. So leave off mentioning a dwelling whose people were scattered by a separation that severs the strongest ropes. And say: if there was a day at Uḥud that a fool recounts, yet the truth shall soon be spread abroad. For there Banū al-Aws all bore it patiently, and theirs was there a lofty remembrance. And Banū al-Najjār defended there and bore it patiently, and none of them was dismayed in the encounter, before the Messenger of God ﷺ, not forsaking him; they had a helper from their Lord and an intercessor. They were faithful when you disbelieved, O Sakhr, in your Lord; and a faithful servant and a wastrel are not equal. In their hands were gleaming swords; when the battle blazed, they had to bring down whoever they struck, prostrate. So they left ʿUtbah lying in the dust, and Saʿd prostrate, while the spears were planted. They left beneath the dust, propped up, a noble one, while his shirt was soaked with blood, shielding the Messenger of God ﷺ where the horses kicked up dust against the people. Those are a people, chiefs among your branches; and in every people there are chiefs and branches. With these we honour God until He honours us, even if a matter, O Sakhr, is terrible. So do not mention your slain, while Ḥamzah is among them, a slain man who lay down for God, obedient. For the gardens of eternity are his abode, and the command of Him who decrees all matters is swift. And your slain are in the Fire; the best of their provision is boiling water and thorny plants, together in its midst.
