The fate of those killed at Uḥud
Translation
✧ [The destination of the slain of Uḥud] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ismāʿīl b. Umayyah narrated to me, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: When your brethren were struck down at Uḥud, God placed their spirits in the crops of green birds that come to the rivers of Paradise, eat of its fruits, and shelter in lanterns of gold in the shade of the Throne. When they found the pleasantness of their drinking and eating, and the excellence of their resting place, they said: Would that our brethren knew what God has done with us, so that they would not abstain from jihād or hold back from war. God, exalted be He, said: I shall convey it to them on your behalf. And God sent down upon His Messenger ﷺ these verses: "Do not reckon..." Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Ḥārith b. al-Fuḍayl narrated to me, from Maḥmūd b. Labīd al-Anṣārī, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: The martyrs are on the bank of a river at the gate of Paradise, in a green pavilion; their provision comes out to them from Paradise morning and evening. Ibn Isḥāq said: One whom I do not distrust narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd, that he was asked about these verses: "Do not reckon those who have been killed in the way of God as dead; rather, they are alive with their Lord, provided for." He said: Indeed, we asked about it, and it was said to us: When your brethren were struck down at Uḥud, God placed their spirits in the crops of green birds that come to the rivers of Paradise, eat of its fruits, and shelter in lanterns of gold in the shade of the Throne. God, mighty and glorious be He, looks upon them with a glance and says: O My servants, what do you desire, that I may increase you? He said: They say: Our Lord, there is nothing above what You have given us; Paradise, we eat from it wherever we wish. He said: Then God looks upon them with a glance, and says: O My servants, what do you desire, that I may increase you? They say: Our Lord, there is nothing above what You have given us; Paradise, we eat from it wherever we wish. He said: Then He looks upon them with a glance, and says: O My servants, what do you desire, that I may increase you? They say: Our Lord, there is nothing above what You have given us; Paradise, we eat from it wherever we wish. Except that we would love for You to return our spirits to our bodies, and then we would be sent back to the world, and we would fight for You until we are killed once more. Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of our companions narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAqīl, who said: I heard Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh say: The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: Shall I give you good tidings, O Jābir? He said: I said: Yes, O Prophet of God. He said: As for your father, when he was struck down at Uḥud, God, mighty and glorious be He, brought him to life, then said to him: What would you love, O ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, for Me to do with you? He said: My Lord, I would love for You to return me to the world, and I would fight for You, and be killed once more. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd narrated to me, from al-Ḥasan, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: By Him in whose hand is my soul, there is no believer who departs the world who would love to return to it for an hour of the day, even if he had the world and all that is in it, except the martyr; for he would love to be returned to the world, and fight in the way of God, and be killed once more.
