Mention of those who went out with the Messenger to Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad

Translation

✧ [Mention of those who went out with the Messenger to Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then He, exalted is He, said: “Those who responded to God and the Messenger after the wound had befallen them”—that is, the injuries—and they are the believers who marched with the Messenger of God ﷺ on the morrow of the day of Uḥud to Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad despite the pain of their wounds: “For those of them who did good and feared God, there is a great reward. Those to whom the people said, ‘The people have gathered against you, so fear them,’ but it increased them in faith, and they said, ‘God is sufficient for us, and excellent is the Guardian.’” And the people who said to them what they said were the party of ʿAbd al-Qays, to whom Abū Sufyān said what he said. They said: “Abū Sufyān and those with him are returning to you.” God, mighty and glorious is He, says: “So they returned with favor from God and bounty, no harm touched them, and they followed the good pleasure of God, and God is possessor of great bounty” because God turned away from them the encounter with their enemy. “That is only Satan”—that is, for that band—“and what Satan cast upon their tongues to frighten his allies”—that is, to terrify you through his allies—“so do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are believers. And let not those who hasten into disbelief grieve you”—that is, the hypocrites—“they will not harm God at all. God intends that He should give them no share in the Hereafter, and for them is a great punishment. Those who purchase disbelief with faith will not harm God at all, and for them is a painful punishment. And let not those who disbelieve think that Our granting them respite is better for themselves; We grant them respite only that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment. God would not leave the believers in the state you are in until He separates the wicked from the good”—that is, the hypocrites—“and God would not acquaint you with the unseen”—that is, in what He intends to test you with, so that you may beware of what may befall you therein—“but God chooses of His messengers whom He wills”—that is, He teaches him that—“so believe in God and His messengers, and if you believe and fear”—that is, turn back and repent—“then for you is a great reward.”
