Mention of what God revealed in the Qurʾān concerning Uḥud

Translation

✧ [Mention of his mercy, the Messenger’s mercy upon them] Then He, blessed and exalted, said: “So by mercy from Allah you were lenient with them, and if you had been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you,” that is, they would have abandoned you, “so pardon them,” that is, overlook them, “and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the matter. Then when you have resolved, rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him.” Thus He mentioned to His Prophet ﷺ His leniency toward them, and His patience with them, because of their weakness, and their little patience with harshness if it had come from him upon them in all that they opposed him concerning what He had obligated upon them of obedience to their Prophet ﷺ. Then He, blessed and exalted, said: “So pardon them,” that is, overlook them, “and ask forgiveness for them” for their sins, those of the people of faith among them who committed them, “and consult them in the matter,” that is, so that you show them that you listen to them and seek their help, even though you are independent of them, in order to win their hearts thereby to their religion. “Then when you have resolved,” that is, upon a matter that has come to you from Me and a matter of your religion in striving against your enemy, which nothing will make right for you or for them except that, then proceed upon what you have been commanded, contrary to those who oppose you and in agreement with those who agree with you, “and rely upon Allah,” that is, be content with Him instead of the servants, “Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him.” “If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; but if He forsakes you, who is there who can help you after Him?” that is, so that you do not abandon My command for the people, and cast aside the command of the people to My command, and upon Allah, not upon the people, “let the believers rely.”
