Mention of what God revealed in the Qurʾān concerning Uḥud
Translation
✧ [Warning them against being among those who fear death for the sake of Allah] Then He said: "O you who believe, do not be like those who disbelieved and said of their brethren when they traveled in the land or went on raids: 'Had they been with us, they would not have died and would not have been killed'—so that Allah may make that a cause of regret in their hearts. And Allah gives life and causes death, and Allah is Seeing of what you do." That is, do not be like the hypocrites who forbid their brethren from striving in the way of Allah, and from traveling in the land in obedience to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and obedience to His Messenger ﷺ, and who say, when they die or are killed: "Had they obeyed us, they would not have died and would not have been killed"—so that Allah may make that a cause of regret in their hearts because of their weak certainty in their Lord. And Allah gives life and causes death, that is, He hastens what He wills and delays what He wills of that, of their appointed terms, by His power. He, Exalted is He, said: "And if you are killed in the way of Allah or die, forgiveness from Allah and mercy are better than what they amass." That is, death is indeed inevitable, there is no escape from it. So death in the way of Allah, or being killed, is better, if they only knew and were certain, than what they amass of this world, for the sake of which they hold back from striving, fearing death and being killed, because of what they have amassed of the splendor of this world, showing little desire for the Hereafter. "And if you die or are killed, whichever of those it may be, to Allah you will be gathered." That is, to Allah is the return, so let not this world deceive you, and do not be deluded by it. Let striving and the reward that Allah has made desirable to you be more preferable to you than it.
