Translation

✧ [Mention of the courage of the strivers of old with the prophets] Then He said: And how many a prophet has fought, with whom were many ribbiyyūn, yet they did not waver because of what befell them in the way of Allah, nor did they weaken, nor did they humble themselves; and Allah loves the patient — that is, how many a prophet suffered death, and with him were many ribbiyyūn, meaning a company; yet they did not waver at the loss of their prophet, nor did they weaken before their enemy, nor did they humble themselves because of what befell them in striving for Allah, exalted is He, and for their religion. That is patience, and Allah loves the patient. And their saying was nothing but that they said: Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excess in our affair, and make firm our feet, and help us against the disbelieving people. [Ibn Hishām’s explanation of some of the rare words] Ibn Hishām said: The singular of al-ribbiyyūn is ribbī; and their saying al-ribāb for the descendants of ʿAbd Manāt b. Udd b. Ṭābijah b. Ilyās, and for Ḍabbah, because they gathered together and swore allegiance, is from this, meaning the companies. And the singular of al-ribāb is ribbah (and ribābah), which are bundles of arrows or sticks and the like, so they likened them to it. Abū Dhuʾayb al-Hudhalī said: And it is as if they were a ribābah, and as if he were a yasar who draws the arrows and splits. And this verse is among verses of his. And Umayyah b. Abī al-Ṣalt said: Around their devils are hosts, ribbiyyūn who fastened a riveted coat of mail. And this verse is in an ode of his. Ibn Hishām said: And al-ribābah also is the rag in which the arrows are wrapped. Ibn Hishām said: And al-sannawwar is coats of mail. And al-dusur are the nails in the rings; Allah, mighty and glorious is He, says: And We carried him upon [a craft] of planks and nails. The poet said, and he is Abū al-Akhzar al-Ḥimmānī, of Tamīm: Nails in the points of the straightened spear-shafts. Ibn Isḥāq said: That is, say the like of what they said, and know that this is but because of sins among you, and seek His forgiveness as they sought His forgiveness, and go on in your religion as they went on in their religion, and do not turn back on your heels retreating, and ask Him as they asked Him to make firm your feet, and seek His help as they sought His help against the disbelieving people. All of this was from their saying, and their prophet had been killed, yet they did not do as you did, so Allah gave them the reward of this world by victory over their enemy, and the good reward of the Hereafter and what Allah has promised therein, and Allah loves the doers of good.
