✧ "Submit to me with the permission of Allah." It submitted with him like a camel with a nose ring that obeys its driver, until he came to the other tree. He took one of its branches and said, "Submit to me with the permission of Allah." It submitted with him likewise, until when he was in the middle he joined them together and said, "Join together over me with the permission of Allah." They joined together. Jabir said: I went out quickly for fear that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sense my nearness and move away. I sat down, and I happened to glance, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ approaching, and the two trees had separated, each standing on its own trunk. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stop briefly and move his head like this to the right and left, then he came forward. When he reached me, he said, "O Jabir, did you see my place?" I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Go to the two trees and cut a branch from each of them, and come with them, and when you stand in my place, cast a branch on your right and a branch on your left." Jabir said: I took a stone and broke it, came to the two trees, cut a branch from each one, then came dragging them, and when I stood in the place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I cast a branch on my right and a branch on my left. Then I caught up with him and said, "I have done it, O Messenger of Allah; what was that about?" He said, "I passed by two graves whose occupants are being punished, and I wanted by my intercession that relief be granted to them as long as the two branches remain fresh." We came to the camp, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Jabir, call for water for ablution." I said, "Any water? Any water?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I did not find a drop among the riders." A man from the Ansar used to cool water for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his leather buckets. He said, "Go to so-and-so the Ansari and see if there is anything in his buckets." I went to him and looked, and I found nothing but a drop in the spout of one of the buckets, which if I poured it out would not be a drink. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I found nothing but a drop in the spout of one of them, which if I poured it out, its dryness would drink it."
