✧ I entered upon Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī ؓ in his house. He said: I found him praying, so I sat waiting for him until he finished his prayer. Then I heard movement under the bed in his house, and it was a snake. I got up to kill it, but he gestured to me to sit down. When he finished, he pointed to a room in the house and said, “Do you see this room?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “There was a young man among us who had recently married, so we went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the trench. That young man used to ask his permission at midday and return to his wife. One day he asked the Prophet ﷺ for permission, and he said to him, ‘Take your weapon, for I fear for you from the Qurayẓah.' So he took his weapon and went, and there was his wife standing between the two doors. He aimed his spear at her to thrust it because of jealousy, but she said, ‘Hold back your spear until you see what is in your house.' He entered and found a huge snake coiled on his bed. He struck at it and pierced it with the spear, then went out and fixed the spear in the courtyard, and the snake writhed on the spearhead while the young man fell dead. We did not know which of them died first, the young man or the snake. We went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him, saying, ‘Call upon Allah to bring him back to life.' He said, ‘Ask forgiveness for your companion.' Then he said, ‘There are jinn in Madinah who have accepted Islam, so if you see any of them, give it notice for three days. If it appears to you after that, then kill it, for it is only a devil.'”
