✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ liked date-palm stalks and would hold them in his hand. One day he entered the mosque with one of them in his hand and saw spittle in the qiblah of the mosque. He scraped it with it until he cleaned it, then turned to the people angrily and said, “Would any of you like a man to face him and spit in his face? When one of you stands for prayer, he is facing his Lord, and the angel is on his right, so let him not spit in front of him nor to his right, but to his left under his left foot. If he is overtaken by haste, let him do thus,” and he spat into his garment and folded part of it over another.

machine translationIt is narrated by al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Dhubāb and Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān. There is disagreement about Ibn ʿAjlān: Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Ibn ʿUyaynah, Khālid b. al-Ḥārith, Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Mujabbir narrated it from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Nāfiʿ, from Abū Saʿīd. It is gharīb from al-Thawrī; he was singled out in narrating it from him, and it is an error (wahm). The correct version is the hadith of ʿIyāḍ from Abū Saʿīd; the correct version is the hadith of ʿIyāḍ from Abū Saʿīd.
