✧ I said to Abu Mahdhurah: 'I intend to go to al-Sham, and I will ask about your adhan, so tell me.' He said: 'I set out with a group of people, and we were on part of the road to Hunayn as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was returning from Hunayn. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met us on part of the road, and the muezzin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the adhan for prayer in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ. We heard the sound while we were off to the side of the road, so we shouted in mockery, imitating it. He heard the sound and said, "Which of you recognizes this one whose sound I hear?" He said: Then we were brought forward and stood before him. He said, "Which of you is the owner of the sound?" He said: The people all pointed to me. He said: He sent them away and kept me with him, and nothing was more hateful to me than what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me. He commanded me to give the adhan, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself taught me the adhan, saying: "Say: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah; ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah." Then he said to me, "Go back and stretch out your voice." He said: "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah; ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah; hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-salah; hayya 'ala al-falah, hayya 'ala al-falah; Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; la ilaha illa Allah." When he finished the adhan, he called me and gave me a purse containing some silver and said, "O Allah, bless him and bless upon him." He said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, command me to give the adhan." He said, "I have commanded you with it." He said: Then everything of dislike in my heart turned to love, and I came to 'Attab b. Usayd, the agent of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I used to give the adhan in Makkah by the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

machine translationAl-Shāfiʿī says that at the beginning of the adhān one says Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, four times, and he held that this is preserved through the transmission of trustworthy (thiqah) memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) in the ḥadīth of ʿAbdullāh b. Zayd and the ḥadīth of Abū Maḥdhūrah, and that it is an addition which must be accepted.

  • Shafiʿī

machine translationThe fourfold repetition of the takbīr at the beginning of the adhān is well preserved (maḥfūẓ) in the narration of the reliable (thiqah) memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) in the hadith of ʿAbdullāh b. Zayd and of Abū Maḥdhūrah. It is an addition that must be accepted, and the practice with them in Mecca, among the family of Abū Maḥdhūrah, followed it down to his time.
