أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّاقِدُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ قَالَ

لَمَّا أَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِالنَّاقُوسِ لِيُضْرَبَ بِهِ لِيَجْتَمِعَ النَّاسُ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ أَطَافَ بِي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَأَنَا نَائِمٌ رَجُلٌ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبَانِ أَخْضَرَانِ وَفِي يَدَهِ نَاقُوسٌ يَحْمِلُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ أَتَبِيعُ النَّاقُوسَ؟ قَالَ فَمَا تَصْنَعُ بِهِ؟ قُلْتُ أَدْعُو بِهِ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ أَفَلَا أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى خَيْرٍ مِنْ ذَلِكَ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ إِذَا أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تُؤَذِّنَ تَقُولُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْخَرَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ تَقُولُ إِذَا أَقَمْتَ الصَّلَاةَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ غَدَوْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ «إِنَّهَا لَرُؤْيَا حَقٍّ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ قُمْ فَأَلْقِ عَلَى بِلَالٍ مَا رَأَيْتَ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ فَإِنَّهُ أَنْدَى صَوْتًا» فَقُمْتُ مَعَ بِلَالٍ فَجَعَلْتُ أُلْقِي عَلَيْهِ وَيُؤَذِّنُ بِذَلِكَ فَسَمِعَ عُمَرُ صَوْتَهُ وَهُوَ فِي بَيْتِهِ عَلَى الزَّوْرَاءِ فَقَامَ يَجُرُّ رِدَاءَهُ يَقُولُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ بِالْحَقِّ لَأُرِيتُ مِثْلَ مَا رَأَى فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «فَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ»

✧ When the Prophet ﷺ commanded the bell to be struck to gather the people for prayer, a man wearing two green garments and carrying a bell in his hand came to me at night while I was sleeping. I said: O servant of Allah, will you sell the bell? He said: What will you do with it? I said: I will call the people to prayer with it. He said: Shall I not guide you to what is better than that? I said: Yes. He said: When you want to give the call, say: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; ashhadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh; ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu Allāh, ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu Allāh; ḥayya ʿalā al-ṣalāh, ḥayya ʿalā al-ṣalāh; ḥayya ʿalā al-falāḥ, ḥayya ʿalā al-falāḥ; Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; lā ilāha illā Allāh. Then he stepped back a little and said: When you establish the prayer, say: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; ashhadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh; ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu Allāh; ḥayya ʿalā al-ṣalāh; ḥayya ʿalā al-falāḥ; qad qāmat al-ṣalāh, qad qāmat al-ṣalāh; Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; lā ilāha illā Allāh. When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. He said: «It is indeed a true vision, if Allah wills. Arise and cast upon Bilal what you saw, and let him give the call, for he has a louder voice.» So I stood with Bilal and began casting it upon him while he gave the call with it. Umar heard his voice while he was in his house on al-Zawrāʾ and stood up dragging his cloak, saying: By the One who sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth, I saw the like of what he saw. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: «To Allah be praise.»
