The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ Zaynab's Departure to Madinah [Her preparation and the Messenger's sending two men to accompany her] (He said): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taken upon him, or the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had promised that, that he would let Zaynab go to him, or that was among what he stipulated upon him in releasing him, and that did not become apparent from him or from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that it might be known what it was, except that when Abu al-ʿĀṣ went out to Makkah and was let go, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Zayd b. Ḥārithah and a man from the Anṣār in his place, and said: "Be in the valley of Yaʾjaj until Zaynab passes by you, then accompany her until you bring her to me." So the two of them went out to their place, and that was a month or so after Badr. When Abu al-ʿĀṣ arrived in Makkah, he commanded her to join her father, so she went out to prepare. [Hind tries to learn of Zaynab's affair] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr narrated to me, saying: I was told on the authority of Zaynab that she said: While I was preparing in Makkah to join my father, Hind bt. ʿUtbah met me and said: "O daughter of Muḥammad, has it not reached me that you intend to join your father?" She said: I said: "I do not intend that." She said: "O daughter of my uncle, do not do it. If you need any goods that would ease your journey, or money to help you reach your father, I have what you need, so do not conceal it from me, for what enters between women is not what enters between men." She said: By Allah, I do not think she said that except to make me do it. She said: But I feared her, so I denied that I intended that, and I prepared.
