The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ [What befell Zaynab from Quraysh when she departed, and Abu Sufyan's counsel] When the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished her preparations, her father-in-law Kinānah b. al-Rabīʿ, the brother of her husband, brought her a camel, and she mounted it. He took his bow and quiver, then set out with her by day, leading her while she was in her howdah. Some men of Quraysh spoke of that, so they went out in pursuit of her until they caught up with her at Dhū Ṭuwā. The first to reach her was Habbār b. al-Aswad b. al-Muṭṭalib b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, and al-Fihrī. Habbār startled her with a spear while she was in her howdah. The woman was pregnant—as they claim—so when she was startled she cast down what was in her womb. Her father-in-law Kinānah knelt down and scattered his quiver, then said: "By Allah, no man shall come near me but I shall put an arrow in him." So the people drew back from him. Abu Sufyan came among a throng of Quraysh and said: "O man, hold your arrows back from us until we speak with you." So he held back. Abu Sufyan came forward until he stood before him and said: "You have not done right. You went out with the woman openly before the eyes of the people, and you knew of our misfortune and our disaster, and what has come upon us from Muhammad. The people will think, if you go out with his daughter to him openly before the eyes of the people from among us, that that is because of a humiliation that has befallen us from our misfortune that occurred, and that there is in us weakness and feebleness. By my life, we have no need to keep her from her father, and we have no desire in that. But return with the woman until the clamor subsides and people say that we have returned her. Then slip her away secretly and deliver her to her father." He said: So he did that. She stayed some nights, until the clamor subsided; then he went out with her by night until he delivered her to Zayd b. Ḥārithah and his companion, and they brought her to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. [Poetry of Abu Khaythamah concerning what happened to Zaynab] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah, or Abu Khaythamah, the brother of the Banū Sālim b. ʿAwf, said concerning what happened in the affair of Zaynab—Ibn Hishām said: it is by Abu Khaythamah: : There came to me that whose worth the people cannot measure for Zaynab among them, of disobedience and sin. And her expulsion did not disgrace Muhammad therein upon a battlefield, while between us is the perfume of Mansham. And Abu Sufyan became, from the confederacy of Ḍamḍam, and from our war, in spite of his nose and regret. We paired his son ʿAmr and the client of his right hand with one of iron rings, tough of links, firmly made. So I swore: companies shall not cease from us, chiefs of an army, in a crowd, marked. We shall drag Quraysh away from unbelief until we give them a second drink with a branding mark above the noses, with a cautery. We shall make them descend the sides of Najd and Nakhla; and if they go down to Tihāmah with horses and men, we shall go down. The hand of time, until our flock is not turned aside, and we shall attach them to the tracks of ʿĀd and Jurhum. And a people who did not obey Muhammad shall regret what they did—and at what time shall they regret! So convey to Abu Sufyan, if you meet him: if you do not make prostration sincere and submit, then receive news of disgrace in this life, hastened, and a garment of pitch, everlasting, in Jahannam. Ibn Hishām said: And it is also related: and a garment of fire. [Poetry of Hind and Kinānah concerning Zaynab's departure] When those who had gone out against Zaynab returned, Hind bt. ʿUtbah met them and said to them: : In peace you are asses, rude and rough, and in war you are like menstruating women. And Kinānah b. al-Rabīʿ said concerning the affair of Zaynab, when he handed her over to the two men: : I marvel at Habbār and the rabble of his people, they wish to break my protection of the daughter of Muhammad. I care not, as long as I live, for their number, nor for what my hand has grasped with the Indian sword.
